Performance and wearable edition

The performance presents a group of people carrying placards inscribed with sentences taken from the paintings – a procession in which it is unclear whether this is a protest or a gathering of a cult.
The sentences, poetic in nature, are fundamentally spiritual and existential, not political; they represent the anxiety of trying to articulate a systemic crisis without a shared political language.
The political gesture, on its face, is gradually being emptied of content: as in Anton Jäger’s theory of Hyperpolitik, the protest reflects how political action has been reduced to spectacle. The „protesters“ – isolated, powerless, conceptually mute – embody the hyper-political subject, anxious, feeling compelled to act yet devoid of any structural power.
The young protesters allude to the figure of the „wandering saint“ from iconographic tradition, as well as to the scream of the figure in Munch’s famous painting – but instead of an explicit one they emit a „silent scream“, echoing the crisis of the self in the age of turbo-capitalism. It is a scream into an empty void.

“A Wearable Edition” presents a conceptually rigorous artist’s multiple by Muntean/Rosenblum, produced in close collaboration with the renowned Viennese fashion designers Wendy & Jim.
Bridging the intimate craft of drawing, the commercial medium of fashion, and the physicality of sculpture, it is a precise, self-reflexive gesture that collapses the distance between the painted surface and lived experience.
Inspired by Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s radical democratization of the art object—where the audience is permitted to take, wear, or consume the work—this project fundamentally renegotiates the relationship between artist, subject, and spectator.

Source material for the edition are 25 different original pastel-on-paper paintings. Every painting has been precisely printed onto a garment cut specifically by Wendy & Jim. Each of the 25 motifs is then produced in two Medium (M) and two Large (L) sizes, resulting in a total edition of 100 meticulously crafted pieces.

The t-shirts are displayed as individual, sculptural installations. Each garment is draped over a 20 x 30 cm demonstration panel, which presents the sentence of the painting that is printed on the t-shirt and is positioned atop a slender, minimalist standing stick measuring about 170 cm in height. The staff mirrors the approximate average height of a young adult, transforming the ensemble into a sentinel-like totem that confronts the spectator at eye-level—a silent, solitary figure inviting physical interaction.

The project recontextualizes elements from the videos “Lost in the Savage Wilderness of Civil Life” (2001) and “There is a Silence to Fill”(2003).
